本書以複雜動態系統理論為元理論，以過去30年的相關文獻為基礎，建構了二語閱讀能力發展模型。該模型將二語閱讀研究的多個方向融為一體，從而以更全面的視角分析二語閱讀能力發展的過程。作者重點論述了二語閱讀能力發展是一個自催化過程，並通過閱讀的反覆迭代實現能力發展；二語閱讀與詞彙發展之間是互因果關係；二語閱讀能力發展與母語閱讀能力相融合。本書還介紹了10種以複雜動態系統理論為視角的研究方法。本書直面複雜、動態的二語閱讀能力發展過程，具有高度的理論性，對於從事二語閱讀研究的學者具有重要的理論價值。我們相信，這種新範式將為二語閱讀能力發展研究帶來新視野、激發新的研究問題和新的研究方法。
