前言/序言
In recent years, influenced by Western linguistic research on quantification,Chinese classifiers have become a hot topic in grammar research A large number of Chinese classifiers display flexibility in syntactic usage and differ greatly in semantics Such factors make the derinition of Chinese classifiers' properties and functions an important issue for linguistic theory Among Chinese classifiers, the status of ge is very special indeed Frequently used in Mandarin, it is widely distributed in diverse syntactic constructions, and therefore known as a general classifier Its generality shows clearly in that ge quantifies not only entities, but also events
Though previous studies already provide rich insight into the historical development and evolution of ge, as well as into its semantic features and the
combination of ge with nouns, there is nevertheless much room for clarification and exploration The essential property of ge as a general classifier, for instance, has yet to be elucidated; the interpretation of ge as a general classifier remains vague; and our understanding of the actual use of ge in Mandarin is far from complete The specific issues in need of further explanation include the semantic relationship between ge and complex post-ge components, the usage of ge in quantifying events, and the different uses of ge in quantifying nominal individuals and events, among others
Basecl on prior theoretical analyses of ge-especially the Generalized Quantifier Theory, the Measuring and Counting Theory, and the Event Semantics Theory-this book explores the essential propert ies of the general classifier ge by analyzing Num +ge+N and V+ge+N structures Our main thesis is that ge is a quantificational marker with two readings: an exact reading, and an at-least reading We support this claim with a large-scale empirical data investigation and statistical analysis, and also provide a formal semantic description of both readings This offers a dichotomous analysis of ge as a general classifier in Chinese
The more specific conclusions of research are as follows:First, we highlight the special semantic properties of ge among Chinese classifiers, comparing it with other major individual Chinese classifiers We then elaborate the semantic distinction between the exact reading and the at-least reading
Discussing the interrelation between the two types of quantificational means (nominal and verbal quantifications) that ge marks, we point out that the v
