本教程是根據《關於大學英語四、六級考試題型調整的說明》閱讀理解部分新設立的長篇閱讀測試題型的要求而組織編寫的。 從理論上講，長篇閱讀介乎精讀和快速閱讀之間。 本教程用以檢測讀者閱讀理解能力的題型主要為一些高端大規模英語考試，如大學英語四、六級考試和英國的IELTS Academic Reading Test所採用的信息匹配題。信息匹配題的特點是考核讀者在篇章和段落層次上的閱讀理解能力，要求讀者能快速找出與每題所含信息相匹配的段落。 本教程有部分篇章採用了多項選擇題。多項選擇題能考核較高層次的認知過程和不同形式的思維方式，因而可有效地檢測閱讀者對所讀篇章傳達的多層次、多範疇的理解能力，所以多項選擇題型常用於檢查讀者是否理解所讀的篇章。 本教程以主題為單元，其優點在於可就某一個話題從不同的側面去論述或描繪，以引起學生對問題的思考和關注。全書共分八個單元，每個單元由四個篇章組成。進行長篇閱讀時，建議對每單元的頭兩篇文章細讀，以熟悉信息匹配題的答題要求和答題方式。讀第三篇時，則可以快速閱讀的方式進行閱讀並答題。
